Finally a great DTV receiver
Pros
Good solid interface, great at tuning both ATSC and NTSC
Cons
cannot work in conjunction with a rotor controller for a rooftop antenna.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I wish there were more DTV tuners on the market. But this is the best that the market is currently offering.
I've gone through a couple of DTV receivers, and most of them didn't have enough time in the R&D oven. Not this unit. It's very solid with an interface my grandmother could understand.
The LG LST-4200A did a better job of picking up DTV channels on the same antenna then my previous DTV tuners. It also does a remarkable job at picking up analog TV- although that feature won't be of much use in a couple years.
Tuning in with the DTV is still a bit slow, but much faster then any other DTV tuner I've used. It has the ability to crop pillarbox bars from 4:3 programming shown on DTV, which is extremely helpful. It's been very reliable and rugged, and it tunes better then anything else on the market that I've seen.
That being said, I'm very angry that I even need one of these boxes. Why is it that no DVD recorder, VCR, or DVR and most TVs cannot receive and decode ATSC signals, even though they can receive over the air analog NTSC? All analog TV will stop broadcasting in less then 2 years, and to this day there are only a small handful of components you can buy at the electronics store that will actually work after that day.
I think that congress should pass a law requiring every store that sells anything that can receive NTSC but not ATSC, give you a refund once over the air analog TV transmissions stop. I think it's criminal most retail stores have been completely unsupportive of the new ATSC standard, resulting in very few products that will work a couple of years from now.
I shouldn't need to buy a separate TV tuner to receive over the air digital TV. But because I can't buy a DVR or affordable TV with an ATSC tuner, I bought this instead.
If you want a great ATSC tuner, this is it. There's nothing else out there that does as good of a job as this, and believe me I'm constantly looking. There are still some DTV channels I can't get with this box because of multipath reflection problems inherent with living in a big city. I'm hopeful future generations of DTV tuners will be better and more reliable at tuning in DTV signals in an urban environment. But I'm not optimistic.
