Great TV for the bedroom or small livingroom

byk1rdm Jan 11, 2009
Pros Cost, programming, weight, USB port for digi photo viewing, picture quality vs cost, packaging container.
Cons Remote should be universal.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  TV offers good value.  It's great as a second TV in a bedroom or small living room.  The picture is good, and it's easy to install, program and use
We decided to upgrade the TV in our bedroom.  After some disappointment with a Mitsubishi, that was replaced with a Sony recently, and dwindling funds, we decided to purchase a more cost effective LG HDTV.  We have had good luck with other LG devices in the past, and were pretty happy with the picture and features the the 37LG50 that we read about and saw in the store.

The TV came is a very well thought out box.  The short, heavy cardboard base supported the TV, base and Styrofoam packaging.  An outer box slipped over the TV and packaging, and was held in place by 4 clever plastic latches that are reusable.  So you don't end up destroying the box when you take the TV out.  This impressed me, and lead me to think that if they put that much thought into the shipping material, the rest of the TV was probably well thought out too.  I think I'm right.

The initial setup and programming was very easy.  There are several precanned display modes two expert programable modes that can be set up depending on lighting conditions and personal taste, and one light sensing mode.  We find ourselves sticking to either the normal setting, or the light sensing mode.

There is a quick menu mode that lets you access most of the parameters that you would normally change from one TV program to the next.  Items such as wide screen/zoom/normal format, sound programing, etc.  A more in depth menu provides access to all settings.  This quick menu is very helpful, and it would be great if the consumer could choose to include or delete items used more or less frequently, respectively.

The remote control doesn't seem to be a universal style.  So, while there are DVD, VCR and other selection buttons on the remote, there are no instructions in the manual on how to program them.  Perhaps they work only with LG devices.

I was worried that some action type scenes such as a football game or action video would have digital flicker like I've seen on some brands, in the showroom.  I have been pleasantly surprised.  Football games are smooth, and I have been very happy with this TV.

This is a fairly lightweight (~38 lbs) TV that was very easy to install using a Peerless wall mount bracket.  I also liked the USB port on the side for digital photo viewing.  Digital photos look great on this TV.  The input output ports are easy to access even once the TV has been all mounted (depending on your bracket of course).
