The Bottom Line:
Buy this until better technology becomes cheaper and enjoy HDTV. Do not buy as just a replacement tv to watch cable as you will most likely not be impressed.
I recently purchased this set to replace an aged 35 in. that was a top contender in it's day. Upon bringing this set home the first things you will notice are the light weight and small footprint. Although the picture seems enormous when in direct view, it somehow seems to take up less space then my previous tv due to it's slender depth. This was a key factor since my wife does not share my "never big enough" mind set, especially for electronics.
After unpacking, I connected my DVD player via s-video and my analog cable via coax and the picture from both sources were pathetic. I then went back to the store and purchased a new progressive scan DVD player and high quality DVI cable but was still not impressed. The next day I called my cable provider and inquired about availability of Digital HD service, they had a box at a local store and I ran over and picked it up. I went home, disconnected the DVD from the DVI input and plugged the cable HD tuner into the DVI and W0W ! It was incredible, total eye candy and I found myself drooling over the image of a snake and the clarity of his scales as I watched Discovery HD theatre.
I have since wired both my DVD and XBOX to component in and think that both look good, but not quite as good as my old PanaFlat. I also tested the DVI-PC with a Mac G4 (not my damn fruit) and it performed well, but again not quite up to standard CRT's.
Conclusion, I love this set and it moved me into a new era with truely stunning HDTV pictures at a price that is within reach, but do not purchase this if you are looking for improved quality of non HDTV broadcasts. I find regular TV to look fair at best, but can be outdone by almost any reasonable quality tube set.
