Good value, nothing outstanding
Pros
Quality, signal stability, display quality
Cons
voice quality so-so, not fast enough for serious web use
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
A good value if you don't need a serious web and work tool. Go Blackberry if you use it for work, iphone/droid if you want more performance.
I'm not a high end cell phone user. I don't have time to sit around toying with a device while I'm out of the home, and when I am home there are certainly more powerful devices to use (laptops, desktops, etc). Consider this a review by a non-technophile.
I got a couple of these phones through Verizon for free in return for signing a 2 year deal in early 2010. That's fine, as we have been with them for years now anyway w/o a contract and voice service has always been excellent. Purchased seperately, the phone is $300 new, or thereabouts.
I liked the idea of a real keypad for texting, even though I rarely do it. It turns out that I don't text enough for it to matter. The screen touchpad is sufficient unless you do a lot of texting. The downside is its thicker than it otherwise would be w/o the seperate pad. I'd also prefer a slider as the clamshell is sometimes awkward.
Bluetooth works instantly with my Volvo and no problems there. Voice quality is definitely not what it was with my previous very basic Nokia phones. Then again, nothing ever was. I purchased a otter box cover to protect the phone, and it MAY degrade the speaker performance somewhat, as the openings for them are quite small.
The web browsing function is slow compared to a real computer. I assume the new 3G/4G tech on newer smart phones is vastly superior. Basically, don't count on using this to browse the web except in an emergency. The constant zooming/expanding needed to view pages is not worth it to me.
The camera is just ok. It also records video which comes in handy. Overall not a bad phone, but then again I am just not nearly as impressed with fancy phones as the masses seem to be these days.
It does fit in a pocket, just don't wear "skinny jeans". In retrospect I realize I would prefer a basic phone that is small and easier to put in a pocket.
The menu system took a while to get used to, but now I can find just about everything I need quickly.
Battery life has not been good. Actually, if you don't use it it is good, but once you start using the phone and lighting up that screen, power goes very fast. That's another reason I'd search for either a newer phone or a simple old-style phone w/o the features.
I do enjoy the visual voice mail feature from Verizon and it works well with the phone. It's $3/mo but helps with checking messages quickly.
