Vivid display, nice feature set, MP3 playback

Pros VFD display, MP3 playback, "Kameleon" style motorized keypad and display, Infrared remote, Inexpensive
Cons Noisy CD/MP3 player audio (60db S/N), no ID3 tag support, no subwoofer level control
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The VFD display makes it a winner. Sound quality is suspect, but most don't notice it.
The 1600MP has a "blank face" security system. When it's not on the front appears to be a blank piece of plastic. Power it on and the vivid VFD display lights up and a little keyboard motors out below it.
The tuner performs well, and there are 18 FM and 6 AM presets. There is a local/DX setting, which changes the seek sensitivity.
The 1600MP will play regular CD's as well as CD-RW's and MP3 encoded discs. There is no ID3 tag support for MP3 files, but MP3 file names scroll on the alphanumeric display. MP3 and CD audio tracks can be accessed directly by entering the track number. Audio quality is a bit noisy though. The noise is only heard on very quiet passages and when the CD mechanism is seeking.
The 1600MP comes with four speaker outputs that provide 22w RMS, 60w peak power. Also there are front and rear line level preamp outputs and a subwoofer output. The subwoofer output can be turned on and off by the unit, but no level aujustment is provided. Line level preamp output is about 1v.
Other features include an infrared remote, 24hr digital clock, loudness setting and a three preset EQ. Keypad backlighting is done with green LED's, so there are no bulbs to burn out.
For the price, this is an excellent unit. The VFD display is bright and readable in any kind of light. The motorized display and keypad are a unique security feature. The tuner is sensitive and rejects multipath distortion quite well. The remote even worked outside of the car, through my window tint. The only thing that I didn't like was the noisy CD player. My girlfriend said the noise didn't bother her so I put it in her car. If you're looking for an inexpensive MP3 capable deck with a great display and a rich feature set, pick one of these up.
