The Bottom Line:
Pony up the extra money for a Whistler Pro-78 or Beltronics Vector 955 if you want a radar detector instead of a ticket notifier.
This was my first radar detector and I replaced it after about 4 months. During that time I have become pretty well versed in the cat-and-mouse game of radar guns and detectors. I have also learned that the Cobra XRS-9340 is useless as a radar detector.
In my state, K and Ka band are the only bands currently being used by state patrols (local PDs are not allowed to operate radar guns for speeding citations here). This detector is abysmal at picking up Ka. There have been times when I have not picked up a Ka alert from a constant-on gun until I have been literally parallel with the unit. When passing drones (signs that emulate K band radar guns) the detector picks up the signal about 200 yards away at best. In a situation on the highway, the patrol has already picked up your speed at this point and the cobra is simply letting you know of your impending ticket! For comparison's sake, other RD's I have used will pick these drones up from AT LEAST 2 miles away.
I have also used this detector in two other states where LIDAR is used. Laser detection is essentially non-existant. Furthermore, You won't pick up radar guns from behind unless you are within about 10 yards.
If you do get this device DO NOT use city mode. You will not pick up anything.
Lastly, the volume on the device is terrible and can barely be heard when music is played in the vehicle at a normal volume. In addition, for some reason, Ka alerts are even quieter than the other alerts. Programming the few features the device has is unintuitive and you can never really tell from the device if you've programmed it correctly, or if your settings have even been saved at all.
I highly recommend spending the extra thirty dollars on a Whistler Pro-78 or even coughing up $100 more for the Beltronics Vector 955. These are similarly priced devices with performance that does not even compare to the Cobra XRS 9340. (I replaced my cobra with the Pro-78).
Cobra is notorious in the radar detector community for producing horribly sub-par detectors, and I now know why!
