Pros Flexible, superior optics
Cons None that should stand in your way except $$$$
Recommended it? Yes
I have to admit it. I always wanted to have a Leica, and was envious of anyone who had one. Now I have my own, and I am a very happy lady. There is one reason to spend the extra bucks to buy a Leica minilux. No, not to satisfy your envious nature. The main reason to buy this camera is its superior German engineered lens.

There are other reasons too. The minilux is very flexible. It has an auto focus and auto program feature that is ideal for the novice, but it also offers the user the ability to choose f-stops and focus "Manually". The manual focus feature is somewhat complicated in that the user is forced to estimate the distance to the subject in meters, so math is involved -- not advanced math, but math nevertheless. But I find the difficulty of the manual feature is a small price to pay for the benefit of being able to adjust composition. And the Leica's buttons are conveniently situated and easy to use.

The camera loads fairly easily with an automatic take up reel. The built in flash is well-situated and I have had no problem with red-eye when I use the red-eye reduction feature. The lens is a fixed length 40mm f/2.4 that focuses from 2.2 feet to infinity. The aperature priority lens operates from f2.4 to f16. And there is an exposure compensation feature to adjust for backlighting, and a self-timer.

As for picture quality, what can I say? Nothing else that I own compares to the sharp results of the Leica lens. I have used a variety of films from color print to color slide to black and white slide, and the results have been remarkable and surpass any other point and shoot camera that I have used and many SLRs.

The quality of the minilux does not come cheap, but if you are like me and really really want the fine quality offered by Leica engineering but don't have thousands to spend, the Leica minilux is a good solid choice.
