An Inexpensive Machine With a Lot of Features and Cheap Refills

Pros Does alot for the price, scans, copies in color, prints photos, easy set up
Cons No USB included, may seem slow for scanning to some
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Can't beat the features at this price.
My old printer, which was just that, just a printer, was out of ink. You can read the review of that one here:

I had a coupon which was for $25 off of $50 at a local office supply store.  I headed out to the store initially looking for ink cartridges, but then thought that I might be able to upgrade my printer and get something a little better for the same price as a couple of ink cartridges.  I saw the Lexmark X2650 all in one was on sale for $40 after a $10 instant rebate.  The first thing I did was check to see how much the replacement cartridges were.  They were a $1 cheaper for than my old printer for the normal yield cartridges.  I did not see any high yield cartridges so I don’t know if they make them for this printer.  I don’t need anything high yield anyway and have found the difference is not noticeable most of the time anyway.

I brought the printer home and used the included cd to install it.  This is an easy step by step process and if you follow the instructions, you will have no issues. It shows you how to do everything, including installing the cartridges. One thing to note is that is does not come with a USB cable and you will need one to hook it up.  The printer basically aligns itself as you print a page out and place it on the scanner to be read.  There are no printed instructions included for the actual operation of the printer, but they can be found in PDF format on Lexmark’s website.

I printed a couple of documents and they came out fine.  There is also a tray at the bottom you can flip up to prevent the papers from falling on the floor when they print.  After that, I made a copy which was quite simple.  Place it on the scanner, close the lid, and press either the color or the black and white button to make a copy.  This feature has come in very handy already.

I then scanned a document and there are several options for this.  You can set it for photos or documents and once they are scanned, you can email them, save them as a PDF, or send them as if they were a fax.  The recommended system requirements are 512mb of RAM.  I have a dinosaur desktop with 256MB and it works, but if I am not scanning anything, I keep the program disabled.  The machine reads and scans the documents somewhat slowly, but that may be because I am used to our powerful scanners at the office.

The color copies and scanned images come through identical to the originals and very clear.  Emailing the scanned documents is easy as well.  I have not printed any photos yet, so I do not know how those would come out.  However, we did print a lot of do it yourself wedding invitations, RSVP’s, and envelopes.  We used a few different colors and all of those came out very nice; the invitations almost looked professional.  It was fairly easy inserting and placing these items and printing to them.  The printer also printed these items very quickly.

For day to day use, this printer is just fine, especially for the price.  Having a scanner and color copier is very nice considering a lot of printers cost about this price.  The machine comes with a one year warranty and has a lot more features than which I will probably use.  It was well worth the price for the do it yourself wedding invitations as having them done professionally still would have cost a lot more.  I recommend the machine for its capabilities and for the price.
