The Bottom Line:
Simple setup, highly configurable, but slowest router I've tested. Can't handle heavy wan traffic (running a game server).
This is my third review of a broadband router. Because I've been on a mission to find a fast inexpensive router that can handle my internet usage. The linksys isn't it.
I host two servers on my home network to a 768k DSL connection. One a simple web server that gets a dozen hits a day, the other a game server that can use 640k up and down with 14 internet players online.
The linksys can't handle the traffic of the 14 players. I've tested a couple of the same models and none could handle more than 3 players before they get dropped. Meaning the router gives up and drops the connection or packets to be able to keep up.
Also, compared to the other two routers I tested this was the slowest in general surfing. I averaged a second or two 'lag' before the website would begin to download.
The linksys does have a couple of things going for it. It's highy configurable, as much as the Netgear RP614 I tested. And much more than the Speedstream 2614. It has many options and even supports Universal Plug and Play, that allows XP machines (and others that I'm not sure about) to open and close ports as required without using the configuration in the router. This allows MSN messanger to be able to recieve files behind the router.
However, for the price... this router is low on the 'bang for the buck' scale. I would highly suggest the Netgear RP614, with more features, software, and speed.
