Does exactly what I wanted it to do - copy movies.
Pros
Inexpensive - fully featured - works well once you take the time to learn.
Cons
A little difficult to understand at first - not as easy as a VCR.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I would buy again, but be prepared to experiment in making disks until you get the hang of it. Fun way to preserve your old VHS tapes.
I bought a Liteon 5005 DVD Recorder to make copies of TV shows stored on the cable company's 'personal video recorder' and use it as a way to copy my old VCR movies. While I have HDTV the cable box 'downgrades' the picture quality when allowing you 'Send to VCR' but the result is far superior to VHS copying, even in the 6 hour mode (3 movies). I like the front input for a camcorder where you can easily copy your DV tapes direct to DVD!
Some of the DVD's I've made on the LiteOn don't play on all my DVD players for some reason, but I've had that from DVD movies I have made on my computer too - mainly on the older DVD players.
I found it not as simple as using a VCR but once you get the hang of it, the job is relatively easy. I haven't seen any advantage to using a DVD-RW disk as you can't seem to erase or copy over them because unless you finalize the disk when you pop it out, few if any DVD players will play it. Perhaps if you used RW disks only in the Liteon it would be all right, especially if it was your only player. It takes all kinds of disks.
My TV system is a little complicated as there are wires everywhere - for Component 1 (my cable box), Component 2 (my Bose 3-2-1 speaker/DVD player), and the AV setting for the Liteon 5005 DVD recorder (which is almost exclusively used for copying from the cable company PVR). Component 1 & 2 each have 5 wires! Oddly, the disks I make on the Liteon won't play on the Bose 3-2-1 player right next to it).
The price was right - the features are tops - and it does exactly what I wanted it to do (make DVD copies from TV, the PVR, a Camcorder, and old VCR tapes (using a VCR recorder). This way I can update all my old VCR tapes to digital and have them readily available (in less space).
Apparently there's a newer model out now (5006) but I can't find any features that the 5005 doesn't have. Liteon allows you to download a software update for their models (something you can't do on most machines) but I can't figure out how to do it yet, although the instructions said it was easy. :)
