Great features - IF THEY WORKED

Pros Features - IF THEY WORKED.. price.. potential as a VCR replacement albeit unrealized
Cons Makes disks that other players refuse to play, noisy fan
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Beware - the disks you make on it may not play on anything else - if you buy it, make sure you can return it.
Would you buy a VCR that produces tapes that could only be played on that VCR itself? That you could not play them on any other VCR, or were not sure if you could?

Liteon LVW-5005 is an example of such a product. DVD technology is still young, and it may not all be Lite on fault, but regardless of that this model or this technology is simply not ready for prime time.

The Lite On was purchased in order to replace functions of a VCR.. If it did what it claims on the box, it would have been a five star unit, especially considering the price point. Recording favorite TV shows and home movies, transferring VHS tapes to DVD without hassle of a PC would be examples of such use. That's what we bought it for.

Unfortunately, I must report there are serious shortcomings which make it pretty much unsuitable for those uses. Sure, it is easy to set up. Sure, it will record just about on any kind of disk. Sure, it will play that disk on the unit ITSELF... but EVERY OTHER Dvd player refuses to play disks produced by the Lite-On LVW-5005.

I am not a novice.. I have extensive technical/computer hardware/software background. I have spent hours trying to resolve this. The disks that Lite-On made were refused by Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic DVD players. I have tried different media, both DVD+RW and DVD-RW, as well as DVD-R. Lite-On does not give you a lot of control over how it records, but what little control it does, I tried it all, and none of it worked.

Upgrading firmware and doing every other trick in the book did not help. I did extensive research on the internet and I am not the only one having these problems. Some players freeze trying to play those disks, other players would not play at all. The same media I used in a Lite-On, when recorded on a computer, even in the same format, is readily accepted by all DVD players. It is then clear that the problem lies in Lite-On recording functions.

All in all, it is pointless to have a DVD recorder that has to be used to play all of the disks it ever recorded. At least with tapes, once you record it, you can play it anywhere.

Lite-On technical support is a joke. Their grasp on English is also questionable. Here is a quote directly from FAQ from LiteOnIt website:

"1. Why can I not get a reply to my email? TOP

Sorry,we don't reply individual mail ,it's proceeded like :
1.We currently recognize only Mandarin and English. "

Make your own conclusions from that.

You may have better luck than me. I got a good deal on this recorder and it would be perfect for what I wanted to do if it worked.. I will be returning it even though I hate to do it. I wasted enough time and money trying to make it work already.
