The Bottom Line:
Because of the features, the price, and my past experience with Lite On products I would recommend this recorder to anyone looking for a good, dependable machine.
Purchased this recorder at Costco for about $180 and this is probably one of the best buys I have ever made. Since purchasing this recorder about two weeks ago I have burned maybe 25 or 30 DVDs and have not had a coaster yet. The recorder acts exactly the way you would expect a VCR to act. That is you can tune television channels as you would with a VCR and simply hit the record button to record what you see on the screen. Not only will it input and output RF, but will work with video, S-video, and component.
So far I have used the recorder to transfer many of my VHS tape collection to DVDs. I have also recorded a television program to see how well it works and recorded several of my LP records to CDs. In every case the recorder worked flawlessly and with the ease of operation far simpler than any other recorder as I have used in the past. As another reviewer has mentioned, the guider function on the remote is the best function on the remote. Pushing that button presents you with a few selections to choose from which allows you to perform the task you wish to perform exactly as you wish without the chance of any mistakes. The guider function let you play back, record, erase, finalize, set recording time and do just about any other setup needed with a couple of menu selections. Most of these functions are also available on dedicated buttons on the remote for the technically macho among you. The other extremely useful function that I find on the machine is the one touch recording known as (OTR). This allows you to set the recording time in half-hour increments by the number of pushes of the record button. Among other things, this allows you to record a one-hour VHS tape using one-hour of a disk even if you're not around to turn the machine off.
The other great thing about this LiteOn LVW-5005 is the All Write Technology. This recorder will apparently write to any media including DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW etc. I have not tried all of the different media possible but I have had no problems using my DVD+R disks and my CD-R disks.
I have three different DVD players and each disk that I have produced on this recorder has played perfectly on all three of my other recorders. In short, I feel that the LiteOn LVW-5005 is one phenomenal recorder especially for the price. I would purchase this machine again in a heartbeat.
