The Bottom Line:
It's acceptable, but it you can wait until this product matures, you are likely to be more satisfied.
I bought this product due to great experience with Liteon brand CD writers that I've purchased for computer use. Liteon continues with their technical lead and innovative features in this product. This includes the ability to write on various kinds of DVD disks and also to CD.
My main application is for transfer of camcorder video to DVD for archiving. I was unable to record successfully with house brand (Fry's Electronics) DVD R/W disks. HP disks worked OK. And they play in my Sony DVD player OK.
The Liteon website offers numerous firmware upgrades, but I question whether the average consumer has the computer knowledge and equipment to succeed at this process. Besides, one of the points of owning a standalone recorder is that it should be indeed standalone - without a need for computer and auxiliary CD writers to support it. Downloads may be in zip or rar format, and the appropriate uncompression software must exist on your PC. You must also have a CD writer and appropriate software (Nero recommended).
Instructions on the Liteon website suffer from poor English translation.
One (serious to me) problem I have encountered with this machine is that (with the latest firmware at the time of this review), Closed Captions cannot be displayed on your TV, either through the TV tuner on the Liteon unit or from DVDs recorded on it. These are the captions sent on most modern TV shows and movies. The Liteon unit strips these signals for some reason. This may just be another one of those bugs that Liteon will fix with a future firmware upgrade.
The Liteon unit lacks auto-clock set, a feature which is almost universal on VCR's these days. It also lacks commercial skip, the ability to mark and skip over commercials automatically upon playback. The remote is not universal, and you cannot adjust the TV volume using the Liteon remote as a result.
As a VCR replacement, this product doesn't quite make it for me yet. However, as a specialized piece of equipment for basic camcorder copying, it may be acceptable.
