You cant ask for more FOR THE PRICE!

Pros DVD-R(W) and DVD+R(W) compatibility!, Low price, many features
Cons Lack of DVD authoring features, not stylish looking
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  You cant beat the price for features of this recording. Also, the ALL-WRITE technology is awesome! Stick in virtually and DVD format disc and it records!
I purchased the Lite-On 5005 dvd recorder for Christmas based on reviews and price for features. I checked out the Apex dvd recorders and various name brand recorders including Sony and Toshiba and the Lite-On had the best features for the price. I have bought various Lite-On computer components in the past and I have had very good luck with them.

Great Features
One of the greatest features of this recorder is the All-Write technology which will write on DVD-R(W) and DVD+R(W) discs. Very few players had this capability and many people have said that it works a great variety of discs (I am currently using CMC DVD-R and Toshiba DVD+R media with no problems).

The DVD GUIDER feature allows you to do easy recording and disc authoring all in one spot. When you hit the record button it begins recording within 2 seconds which is very nice. I also like that this recorder offers a wide range of recording quality from HQ (1hour) to SP (6 hour, but very low quality). You can add chapters while the disc is recording.

The authoring tool allows you to name each chapter and organize the files on the disc. The recorder has an OSD (on screen display) while recording so you can see how much time you have used and how much time you have left.

Many reviewers have complained about fan noise but I can hardly hear the fan turn on when my player is running. The unit seems very solid and has a wide variety of inputs. I personally like the front-side IEEE 1394 port for easy digital camcorder hookup.

What I don't like
When I first took this recorder out, I was disappointed of the looks of the unit. It is boxy and looks like a cheap VCR. Definitely not impressive looks. The display uses an older looking amber colored text output.

One of the biggest downfalls of operation is the limited authoring capabilities. You are stuck with 1 DVD theme to use and there are no special effects you can apply to your creations. Also, when you stop recording, it takes the player up to a minute to think before you can start recording again.
