Cons Quality comes at a premium... but its worth the extra. Setup menu over-exhaustive
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  True, Sony makes Rear Projections as well but overall, they will never be superior to the ever-outstanding Loewe products, even though you have to pay to get the best.
There are a few things that you would expect from a Loewe TV: Excellent build quality, many features, fantastic design, high quality sound and vision and of course the big hole in the hip-pocket if you do decide to purchase one, and the Articos keeps with this tradition while it also takes the ball game to an all new level.

For those who don't actually know what Loewe is, they are a German company specialising mainly in visual technology but also in audio, and the Articos 55 HD reviewed here may be called the flagship model of the Loewe range.

Let us begin here with the picture quality. The only word which can probably describe this TVs picture is simply breathtaking. Loewe has spent an immense amount of time fine tuning the picture quality of all the TVs and reaching a temporary pinnacle with the Articos.

The Articos has a native resolution 1280 by 720 pixels, so from sports to movies to just normal TV, the picture is so clear and so well defined, even without the help standard of high definition digital modules and with it, well, there is just no word that would justify it, and in addition to that, the Articos is HDTV ready.

Also helping the Articos picture are Loewe's own features and just to name a few: Digital Line control, Digital Movie Mode Plus, Digital Scene Control, 720p digital Progressive Scan and so on.

Few TVs that have good picture have good sound to compliment it but in the Articos' case, it does. The TV incorporates two-channel stereo sound, with four speakers with a power output audio level of 2 by 40 watts at 4 ohms, which gives the sound so much life, and depth. It is also clean and crisp which is rare in TV speakers making you feel like you're actually at the movies or at a live performance. All this is helped by the switching to 'Virtual Dolby' mode or the 'Panorama audio' mode. You can choose to upgrade the TV with the optional Dolby Digital Upgrade Kit.

Loewe also makes a home theatre system which compliments the Articos, which consists of a Certos DVD/Master unit and Concerto 5.1 Speakers (which is basically a Bose Acoustimass speaker system in a stylish casing as Bose actually built the internals for the speakers) or you can choose to combine it with a Bose Lifestyle system which was designed for close integration with the Articos.

Setting up the Articos is easy. Simply switch on the TV and if it is the first time, there is a computer-style 'wizard' which guides you through the setup process, from setting the channels to the sources which will be connected to the TV and other help sections as well as teaching you how to connect various sources to the Articos. Some steps weren't really necessary and the whole process is a bit long winded but it was easy.

Loewe has always has always taken great care to offer all available connections on their TVs and the Articos is no different. On the back of the TV there are 3 SCART audio visual input/output of which 3 are S-Video capable, 2 are RGB capable and one is component video capable and thats not all, there are also possible connections to allow the Articos to also act as a computer monitor. On the side, there are connections for S-Video, composite video, stereo audio and headphone input.

The specification list of the Articos is topped with many other operations, some of which include: 2000 pages of teletext memory, two tuner Picture in Picture, Splitscreen TV/TV and TV teletext modes and so on, while there are also upgrades for an internal digital 80GB hard disk

Loewe has also made the Articos ready for future technology thanks to Loewe's new configurable MediaPlus chassis, meaning the Articos will last a long time to come.

The Articos comes with Loewe's own RC2 Universal remote control which is programmable to control other sources within the home.

Finally here, there is one bad side to the Articos or more correctly, this type of TV in general. Rear Projection TVs create picture with the help of a lamp, and this lamp needs to be replaced after around 2000 hrs, and this is very expensive. Still, Rear Projections are still worth considering over plasmas and LCDs simply because its picture is far superior, and that is most important in a TV, is it not?
