The Logitech Cordless Optical Mouse - Excellent, Despite the Batteries

Pros No cord, no ball, accuracy, plug & play.
Cons Constant battery replacement
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  See Review.
Because I work at least eight hours a day on a computer anything that makes my day a bit easier is a blessing. I couldn't live without my T3 connection, my big flat screen monitor, or my Logitech Cordless Optical Mouse. I can't ever imagine going back to using a mouse with a cord and ball.

The Cordless Optical mouse comes with a base unit, USB cord, PS/2 pin connector (for those using a Windows version older than 98), batteries, the mouse itself, and a CD-ROM with Logitech's MouseWare software. Setup is essentially plug and play – the base unit gets plugged in to your computer with the USB and then you'll be using your new mouse immediately.

Although this mouse is one of the cheaper ones that Logitech offers, it has the two key features that make it worthwhile. First, it's cordless so you can use it on just about any surface. There's no need for the mouse to be right in front of the base unit or anything (I've tried it from a variety of distances and angles on my desk with no problems) so you have the freedom to move around without cords getting in the way. Second, since the mouse is optical there is no ball in the mouse that will need to be cleaned regularly or start sticking after awhile. This also means that the Cordless Optical Mouse is quiet, with none of the squeaks that traditional mice tend to develop after awhile no how diligent you are with keeping them clean.

The shape of this mouse is nothing special, though it does work just as well in your left hand as the right. The pointer moves smoothly and accurately with no jumping around or other problems. The mouse has the standard two buttons plus a scroll wheel/button that is pretty much standard on most mice these days. Although I have not had an interest in installing it, the mouse does come with Logitech's MouseWare software which I understand utilizes the buttons for one-click web browsing functions like access to bookmarks, email, and navigation and you can even customize button assignments to suit your needs.

My only problem with the Logitech Cordless Optical mouse is the batteries and the fact that there is no way to turn the base unit/mouse off. The mouse needs two AA batteries and although it comes with them I find myself constantly needing to replace them despite the company's claim of a "Smart power management system" that keeps the batteries working for months. I find myself replacing the batteries once every month or so and although there is a warning light to let you know when the batteries are low it seems to come on right at the moment the batteries die.

Despite the battery issue, I love my Logitech Cordless Optical Mouse. The pros far outweigh the cons and I don't see myself every using a traditional mouse again. The accuracy and convenience of a cordless optical mouse just can't be beat when comparing the two. With a price of $40 or less (depending on sales and such) this is one device I'd wholeheartedly buy again, though I've had mine for about a year and have had no problems with the mouse or base unit that would necessitate replacement - it's well worth the extra expense for batteries.
