This works fairly well ***Updated July 2009

Pros Reliable, nice features, modest cost
Cons Difficult to install; dropped connections: stopped working shortly after warranty period was over.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Not worth buying. The 2wire unit (linked in epinion) is far superior.

Update July 2009
This unit stopped working after about a year and a half and I replaced it with the 2Wire 2701 HGB Wireless Router. While D-link does provide cost effective product, their stuff does wear out. I no longer recommend this product, and i will likely not buy another D Link oroduct.

The original epinion is shown below.

I was looking about a year ago for a wireless router. I got my wife a Dell Inspiron 6000 for Christmas and I needed to get a wireless router so that she could get connected.

I read a few epinions, checked out some review sites and ultimately settled on the D-Link Airplus Extreme G Wireless Router as having good features for the price, and also having a $20 rebate at the time. I have also had positive experiences with other D-Link products.

This unit has the following specs:
*Compliant with the faster 811.g data transmission standard, yet backwards compatible to 811.b
*Vpn, Firewall and BHCP capabilities
*4 ports
A claimed indoor range of 100 meters
Security protocols WPA with support for 802.1x. This is automatically enabled if you have Microsoft XP- SP2 or higher.

Initally I had planned on installing it on my son’s cable box and routing from that. He started getting dropped from online games intermittently and so he said to install it on my DSL instead.

Set-up on the cable modem was a snap and occurred right away.

Set-up on my DSL proved to be much more difficult. It was my fault because I did not understand my connection all that well. For some reason, I was getting hung up on the question during set-up where I had to put in a user name and password. I have a direct connection, but setting up with the direct connection didn’t seem to be working, either.

D-link provides a site on the net to use as demo/instructions and test if things don’t go right. It seemed helpful, but wasn’t enough to get me through my issues without the phone calls.

Finally, after a couple of calls to my DSL vendor, a couple of calls to D-Link technical support, which were helpful, I had the router going.

The physical setup was easy. I plugged a cable from the router to my DSL source and another Ethernet cable was used to set up my own PC. Detection was no problem on my wife’s laptop.

The unit can be configured to filter out based on IP or URL and can block domains, a parental control feature. The firewall also has capability for 64 and 128 bit encryption. I did not set up the firewall functions because I have effective firewalls on both the computers that would be connecting through this.

On balance, the connection has worked well. We live in a ranch-style house. The laptop usually can connect from anywhere in the house. There are occasional periods of poor connection, that are resolved by moving the laptop. On the desktop, I seem to be getting a lot more AOL disconnects than I used to, and a few more general disconnects but it’s not that big a deal.

So, I can recommend this unit as having good functionality and features for the price. Installation was difficult but I don’t know that any competing unit would have been easier.

Thanks for reading. God bless!
