More Tinnitus than I Bargained For.

Pros Great sound. Ability to impress people with the word "Subwoofer."
Cons If speakers have free will, can they go to heaven?
Recommended it? Yes
Like some of my other fellow epinionites, I received my Logitech SoundMan X2 speakers as part of emusic.com?s free giveaway. I spent $25 on mp3s, and I got the speaker system and a pair of cool Jensen headphones.

The Soundman X2 is Logitech?s high end speaker system, with bigger sized speakers, more power, and a $100 retail price tag. Logitech isn?t known for its musical talents (they're famous for mouse-making), so I was skeptical about the X2. But as I mentioned, I got a great deal, so I tried them out anyway.

The system consists of 3 components; two speakers and a subwoofer. The right speaker, which contains the LED on-indicator and volume control, is plugged into the subwoofer using an unusual round connector. The left speaker uses a normal mini-plug that also goes into the subwoofer, and a third cable with a mini-plug on both ends goes from the woofer to the computer (or other source). Setting the system up is pretty easy, especially since you don?t have to worry about mixing up the left and right speakers, but as you can imagine, there are cables everywhere. The sub looks like it?s spawning twins via some gnarly umbilical cords.

But that?s secondary. What really matters is the sound quality. And for Logitech?s first try, they did a pretty good job. The speakers are both very clear, and the bass is sufficiently booming. You won?t mistake it for a $300 speaker system?the bass lacks that certain groundshaking, earshattering thunder that separates the (deaf) men from the (poor) boys. Still, I?ve already gotten complaints from my housemates about ?hearing [my] stupid music from the street,? and that?s just with the volume set to 10% and the subwoofer running halfway. Compared to my previous set up, which consisted of teeny $15 bargain speakers, it?s a huge improvement. My video games are scaring the heck out of me again.

There are only two noticeable problems with the system. First, the headphone jack is on the back of the subwoofer, not on the front of one of the speakers. Logitech assumes most people will mount the subwoofer near their chairs, with the speakers set far apart, like it shows in their manual. Nuh-uh. Most people set their speakers right next to the monitor (that?s why the speakers are magnetically shielded, after all), and hide their subwoofers way under their desks. I don?t like being forced to do push-ups every time I put on my neato Jensen headphones.

The other problem is with the On/Off switch. See, there isn?t one. Like my computer and my monitor, my speakers now have the ability to turn themselves off at their discretion. I haven?t noticed a problem with them not turning on fast enough when I start playing audio (they sleep after about 15 minutes), but I?ve heard others complain, and it bothers me to have to take orders from my appliances.

Nevertheless, the system is above average. Before my new computer arrived, I had it amplifying my little handheld radio, and it passed the ?rocking out? test like a champ. Its styling, sleek, black, round and tall, is sure to impress. If you can pick up an X2 at a decent price, grab it and don?t hesitate.

Yes, I used the word ?heck.? Bite me.

Update: I had these speakers for three months without noticing that even with the volume knob set all the way down, you can still hear them. Having a roommate has made me more sensitive to my speaker volume. I no longer recommend these speakers for anyone who has to shut the audio down frequently.
