Lowrance Globalmap 100 GPS - a great product

Pros Reliable, durable, accurate, rapid satellite acquisition
Cons Does not have WAAS capability, battery life could be better
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The Lowrance Globalmap 100 handheld GPS unit provides reliability, durability and accuracy with a very clear map display lacking only WAAS capability and ease of single handed operation ergonomics.
I have been using a Lowrance Globalmap 100 GPS for 5 years in conjunction with MapTech Offshore Navigator charting software running on a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop PC with complete success. The Lowrance Globalmap 100 GPS has given exceptional, trouble free service as well as providing the comfort that if the PC should fail or crash, I'm left with a position indicating map display on the GPS (albeit with considerably less detail). I carry a spare Lowrance Globalmap 100 GPS unit (pre-set to interface with the PC) in case the first one should ever become lost, damaged or should fail but it has never been required to "step in". The battery cover panel requires firm pressure to properly latch (at which point the latches audibly click into place) and once properly latched, it never fails. Satellite acquisition is relatively quick (usually well with in one minute) and once acquired, position is never lost while operating from the nav station desk, inside a fiberglass sailboat (Ericson 32) without an external antenna. My only concern is that the Lowrance 100 GPS does not have the more recently available WAAS capability but it seems to be extremely accurate and position stable without it which can be particularly noted when it is placed on "anchor watch". When an earlier Eagle GPS 12 unit I had been using failed (the Eagle and Lowrance GPS 12 units were identical), I sent it to back Lowrance for service and was informed that it was no longer supported but Lowrance allowed $100 off the price of an upgrade to a new Globalmap 100 GPS unit. I find that the Lowrance Globalmap 100 GPS is a reliable and useful product backed by a responsible and customer responsive company.
