The Bottom Line:
It has all the critical features, sounds great, and is a good value.
The factory stereo in my 1999 Acura Integra died and I wanted a replacement that played MP3 files, was compatible with CD-RW discs, sounded good, and had a simple interface. And it had to cost less than $150. I took the advice of the sales associate from the on-line vendor from which I purchased it and chose the Pioneer DEH-P3700MP. I also received an installation kit from the vendor.
Installation was very easy and the DEH-P3700MP fits in nicely with my interior and dash. The unit has a removable faceplate, but I went ahead and mounted it with screws since I knew I'd end up losing it along the way. I did not need any of the supplied installation hardware as the kit that came with it had everything required.
Sound is very good, even at low volumes. It features a 'loud' button to boost bass and treble, but I don't use it because the EQ settings produce a similar effect. The EQ comes with several profiles and I found one out of the box that suited me almost perfectly. The supplied EQ profiles can be used as a baseline to create custom profiles so it was easy for me to tweak the settings to my taste. The unit is far louder than my dead factory stereo and I've yet to induce any distortion in my mix of factory and Kenwood speakers (the factory stereo distorted before I felt it was loud enough).
I'm very pleased with MP3/CD-RW operation. I burned a number of folders on several different discs and had no problems playing any of them back. Sound quality is excellent and folder navigation is easy. It's GREAT to be able to drop several CD's worth of music on one disc and just record over it when I'm ready for a change.
I'm pretty old school when it comes to car stereos and I despise lots of tiny buttons. The Pioneer has a pretty good interface. The buttons are fairly small, but they are well-lit and I quickly grew used to their location. I spent about 15-30 minutes going through the manual and playing with all settings and operations and haven't touched the manual since.
My one minor gripe is that you can only adjust bass and treble settings through the equalizer. Doing that requires diving a couple of layers down into the EQ menu. In other words, it's impractical to change settings per song or disc. You'll pretty much need to set it and forget it.
I'm very pleased with the DEH-P3700MP and I am once again enjoying my commute to and from work!
