The Bottom Line:
I would pass due to the periodic glitches and freezes.
I bought this version last year, in October of 2005, for about $150.00. Nothing was intuitive, and the manual was adequate at best. That being said, I bought it primarily to record from TV and it did a passable job. The quality of most recordings was very good to excellent as long as I stayed within 2 hours. Anything beyond that was noticeable in terms of quality loss, and anything over 4 hours was akin to VHS quality. Throughout, some recordings would just not work. The problem is that nothing on the machine indicates that it is not actually recording. The red recording light would be on, the counter would reflect that it was recording, but the disc would turn up empty. As with the other reviewer, sometimes the tray just would not eject the disc and the whole thing would freeze up. Most recently, i.e., yesterday, January 23, 2007, the machine showed the message "blocked." It wouldn't do anything; the tray opened and closed on its own about 3 times, and then the message appeared. I called Magnavox and their tech support basically said you're out of luck unless you take it to get repaired, which I'm sure would cost close to what I paid. I'm done with Magnavox.
