The Bottom Line:
This unit definitely deserves your consideration for a HT unit, especially if music is a priority.
I have owned the SR-5200 for over ten months. I have not regretted a moment of it. I am a complete music nut, so when it came time to buy a receiver for my HT setup, musicality was a big priority. I listened to units by Sony, Onkyo, and Technics, but the Marantz, BY FAR, blew the others away with their ability to reproduce music accurately.
As I said above, my favorite part of this reciever is the "Source Direct" switch. I have a mid-fi cd player and a vintage mid-fi turntable, and I really enjoy being able to hit the "Source Direct" button to cut out all of the 5200's preamplifier section. I hear a definite improvement in sound when I use that feature.
Another feature I love is the ability for this unit to upgrade to 7.1 capability. I own an SACD player, and I use that switching and those connects to hook up that unit. I love the multi-channel sound reproduced by the Marantz...and this is someone who was completely against MCH a year ago.
In terms of movie sound, the Marantz never lets me down in that department. It reproduces the full spectrum of audio effects effortlessly, but especially, it does an outstanding job with musical soundtracks. In my rather large basement, it never strains.
Having owned many vintage Marantz units, I am impressed with the build quality of the unit. The price, in my opinion is hard to beat...I truly think it rivals my NAD receiver.
