Pros - Great sound - Inputs/outputs/pre-outs for everything - Well built
Cons - Basic Remote - Basic Manual - Audible click on/off + 1 second digital delay
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great sound and flexibility without breaking the bank.
After ten years it was about time to replace my tired old pioneer receiver.

I did some listening around and came across Marantz; the models I listened to were the SR 7300, 6300 and the 5300. The main difference between the 5300 and 7300 is the 7300 has component in's and out's. But, the 7300 receiver does not up/downmix video signals. So you will be switching your Video input type on your TV. Apparently the new SR 7400 up/downmixes everything into whatever output you have connected to your TV, nice touch.

I imagine when I buy my next widescreen it will have multiple component in's as well as multiple everything input's, so I will be connecting my video sources directly into the TV anyway. So that narrowed my choice down to how much I was willing to spend. In Canada the 5300 is $650, 6300 is $750, 7300 is $850. I pondered over this for several weeks until one day I walked past the audio store and they had it on sale (as the new SR-X400 line was coming in) for $400 - Sold! Actually while I was there all of the receivers sold; it reminded me of old ladies grabbing sale items out of a clearance bin, pushing each other out of the way.

I like the sound of this receiver; very open and clean. They obviously use quality amps as this little guy sounds better than the run of the mill denon, yamaha (sounded bright, movies sounded good though). Marantz also has Night Mode for when the kids are sleeping (reduces movie volume peaks in digital sources.) It has programmable digital inputs - 2 optical 2 coax (assignable to any video input) as well as a full range of line outputs (no balanced outputs) to hook into your separate amplifier(s); as well as and 1 digital optical and 1 digital coax output.

Setup is relatively easy as there is an on-screen setup menu for speaker size and distance, sub on/off, video input assignments, etc.

Very flexible unit, it would actually make a nice pre-amp, use this receiver and slowly add seperate amps by way of the pre-outs.

I replaced the remote with the LCD learning remote (RC-1400) that shipped with the new SR 7400 which gives full control over the receiver plus every other component in your system. The remote stopped lighting up a month after I bought it and was replaced under warranty.

Down side: The remote is very basic, the manual isn't the best, and it makes an audible click when turning off and on and when you start a digital source it pauses a second before starting.

You can find these guys for cheap - look around as new models have arrived.
