The ETX 90EC telescope is actually a very affordable telescope for those on a budget and brand new to astronomy. It offers excellent optics for the money and is priced in the $500-600 range. It can offer fun for the entire family.
The biggest advantage is that the telescope is light weight and therefore can be taken out away from home to view in darker skies or with astronomy clubs or groups. The electronic controls are easy to learn for practically all age groups. This is a terrific beginner telescope. The optional Autotracker device makes it easy to find celestial objects from an upgradable database with the optional computer cable and updates are available from the Meade website (http://www.meade.com).
As for all things, there are drawbacks. The telescope does not come equipped with things like the tripod, Autostar, or AC power cord. I was really disappointed in the lack of power cord because if you are viewing from home, it is much cheaper to use electricity than having to replace the 8 double AA batteries.
All in all, it is a terrific telescope for beginners. If you are looking something more substantial, powerful, and something that includes the tripod and computer database you would need to check into the LX-series telescopes such as the LX90 or LX200 scopes.
