Experiences with a new LXD75 AR-5

Pros Computer control. Ball-bearings on both axis. Accurate clock drive. Steel tripod. Outstanding optics. Portable.
Cons Plastic star diagonal. Focuser is just OK. It should be replaced for serious use.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Outstanding quality and value for the money. Excellent optically and mechanically.
Ok, I've read all about the problems the LXD55 mount had but I bought a LXD75 hoping the bugs would be ironed out. When I looked at the drive gears through the inspection openings, I see the same gear arrangements as used in the LXD55. I fully expect the gear set-screws to loosen-up on their own so I plan to use the hacksaw-blade mini-plate fix detailed on other web sites. Other than that, this is a whole new animal.
First off, the axis motions are ULTRA-smooth. If you wanted, you could spin the scope on the DEC axis like a propeller (no sticky Chinese grease problems here!). Second, the Autostar system was VERY easy to set up and it worked in outstanding fashion (the object was always within the field of view) the first time I tried to use it. Slow motion movements were very smooth also. Tracking? Wow. I had Epsilon Lyra centered at high power, went inside for 3 hours, and came out to find them still centered-up. Not bad at all. Finally, the tripod is VERY stable. They now use tubular steel legs and the results are excellent.
The optics on the AR5 are just outstanding. The crispness of the images rival the view I get through my classic '59 Cave eight inch newtonian. Can you say: "Razor Sharp?" False color is apparent on really bright objects like Venus or Vega... but it isn't bad at all.
My overall impression is: This is a LOT of quality telescope for a lousy 900 bucks. I wouldn't have believed this was possible 10 years ago. I still can't believe it. You want a great scope? Buy this one. You won't regret it.
