Great for daytime viewing - NOT recommended for nighttime viewing.

byzept Aug 26, 2003
Pros Fairly inexpensive, lightweight, easy assembly, 25mm and 9mm lenses come with the telescope.
Cons Everything upside down in viewfinder. Accessory tray cheap thin aluminum. Battery-operated LED dies rapidly.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  I would never recommend this telescope to anyone, simply because it does not deliver what it promises for nighttime viewers. I would however highly recommend a Newtonian reflector telescope.
I am completely new to the realm of telescopes, and so I read just a tiny bit before going out and buying this achromatic telescope.
It is best suited for daytime and land viewing - NOT for night time planet, star and nebula viewing.
The built-in computer and the user manual claims that the computer can find any star or planet programmed into it, but this is an outright lie. I programmed it to find Mars, and after proper calibration according to the telescope, its coordinates showed me where Mars should be - which was completely off. I had to manually redirect the telescope at least 72 degrees and try to center Mars in the scope myself, at which point it looked no bigger than when one views it with the naked eye.
I probably could have had a similar viewing experience through a cardboard paper-towel roll.
Also, the LED kept dying and I was using a brand new Duracell 9-volt battery. The LED is faint to begin with and just grows fainter by the minute, dying out completely within 6 minutes.
Lastly, the viewfinder that comes pre-assembled to attach to the side of the telescope had its optics all wrong. Everything appeared upside-down when looking through it.
During daytime telescope use,one can see up to eight miles across the San Francisco Bay from shore to shore.
Hot days will distort things because of heat waves, so use the 25mm lens, as opposed to the 9mm lens.
That's about it - daytime viewing: great, nighttime viewing: horrible.
