The Bottom Line:
Excellent value if stores are clearing them out and you can find one. Highly recommended, for this price range.
The monitor on our main computer blew up. So needed a new one ASAP. We had a 4 year old 17" CRT monitor. Since needed one now, figured would just get another 17" CRT.
Went to Staples (the closest store to us), and looked over their selection. I did look at LCD's but didn't want to spend the money at this point. So had picked out a 17" CRT in the $135.00 range.
The salesman then told me they were clearing out their Envision EN-5100e 15" LCD's. Price $179.99. But I also had a $30.00 coupon. So ran home to print the coupon (was only good for items over $150.00), and did some quick internet searching. Reviews I found were mixed. However for the price I could not pass it up. So went and grabbed one.
Picture is excellent. Much better then our old CRT. Very good contrast. So clear in fact we have actually turned the brightness down a little and find that very easy on the eyes while being just as easy to read. We don't do graphic and only small amount of digital photography. However my wife does customer service items and reads and replies to a lot of e-mails. She does find this monitor to be very sharp and easy on the eye's.
At first I was concerned going from a 17" CRT to a 15" LCD. However, most brand new 17" CRT's have a viewable area of 16". Our old, cheap 17" CRT probably had a viewable are of 15.75". We cannot tell a size difference.
It really is amazing how much less room the LCD takes up on a desk. Our office desk is used for more then computer stuff, so desk space is important. I can't imagine going back to a CRT. Sure it would be great to have a 17" LCD. And may get one in the future. But for this price and quality, can easily live with this.
I went back to pick up 2 more for my kids computers. However, they were already out. He hoped to get some more, but did admit that they were not going to carry it any more. This model still shows at the Envision web site, so not sure if it is actually discontinued or not.
No problems hooking up or using. The plug and play worked fine (Win '98SE) with the supplied driver. The auto feature seems to work well.
