I have been looking forward to writing this epinion, it is about my favorite mouse, the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical. Not a name that trips off the tongue but certainly a mouse that is heavy duty and in my opinion will make your computing life that much easier and enjoyable. Microsoft have got it right with this little beauty, here I will explain how.
Installation
Installation is quick and easy, it takes about 5 minutes. The IntelliMouse Optical plugs into your USB port or into a PS/2 port with the supplied adapter. The IntelliPoint software for both PCs and Macs allows you to program the two extra side buttons and the wheel button. Once you set up the buttons, the mouse will become active.

The optical technology works by taking 1,500 pictures per second beneath the mouse and comparing the pictures to track movement across the surface.

The IntelliMouse Optical is one of Microsoft's family of ball-free mouse products using digital optical tracking technology.
The IntelliMouse Optical is silver in color and incorporates Microsoft?s Optical Technology. There is now one button on each side of the IntelliMouse Optical. The tail of the mouse radiates a warm Red glow which originates from a laser.
The IntelliMouse Optical smaller body is comfortable for people with smaller hands.
Using the Mouse
Surface
The IntelliMouse Optical is great on most surfaces and doesn't require a mouse pad!
Wooden desks, magazines, towels, carpet and other non-reflective surfaces can all be used. The IntelliMouse Optical needs to be on an opaque surface so you will need to avoid placing it directly onto glass surfaces. I even used it on a plate once!
Multi Tasking
Whether you want to use the Mouse for documents, spreadheets, games or programming it does the job. It is particularly good for games playing where speed of response really matters, it has improved my games playing no end! I have heard people who use CAD (drawing) applications say that this mouse saves considerable time compared to ball types.
Mouse Control
This Mouse changes the way people use a mouse by removing the ball that is underneath. This gives you more control and accuracy. The need for cleaning the mouse and mouse pads are also eliminated, this mouse collects no dust or grime. The two buttons on the side are also convenient. The Intellipoint Software lets you customize all four keys plus the wheel to perform many different operations (e.g. Single click, double click, goto desktop etc,)

Unlike some breeds of Mice, the Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical works with both Macs and PCs.
Conclusion
You may not be a Microsoft fan but they got it right when they built this mouse. It simply does the job intended, once you have used it I am convinced you will not go back to ball type. The extra cost is well worth the investment.
