A Fresh Device That Actually Does Think Differently...
Pros
Great Device, Quality Made, Good Software, Great Sound, Modern
Cons
Difficult to Install Software. Lack of Apps, "Under-dog" product
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Buy a Zune HD. The device is all-around sheer greatness. 16GB of brilliance. Everything about it just works.
The new uniform and ominously present Apple product line is becoming a bit bland and lacking in real innovation or a sort of new colour. Looking for a breath of fresh air? Then the Zune HD is quite possibly just right for you. I bought this new Microsoft product because I had previously (accidentally) sent my 8GB Zune through a washing machine... and the touch pad no longer worked. The new Zune HD looked like it had the features and cool user-interface that I wanted.
First Impressions
The Zune HD, in my opinion, is a very cool device. The slim and small feel is very appealing , and the anodized aluminium back is quite good. My very favourite thing about the device is the sound quality. Since earbud headphones don't fit into my right ear, I use Bose QC3 Headphones; and I would say that the Zune HD has virtually unsurpassed sound qulaity. The sound is absolutely perfect. The equalizer (formerly not on a Zune) also helps you customize the sound experience to fit a number of preset genres.
Product Synopsis
Like Apple's products, the Zune HD's are very well made, and they feel like they are quality built. The thing that really sets the Zunes apart, however, is not the build quality. I think that the biggest difference is the interface, the good-looking software and the very neat photo-collage that will go along as songs play. I'm sure that you, too will love this about the Zune.
Software
I love this product's feel, and I like the software-to an extent. I have always had loads of trouble installing and getting the software to work. The software comes directly from a download off the website. My problems are usually limited to getting the bloody software installed. I have had to call the Zune customer support almost every time I've installed it on different computers. While the customer support is very helpful and knowledgable, I don't think I should have to go through that every time, if you see what I'm on about. Once the software is installed, though, it is truly exceptional. One of my qualms about the thing is that there is a quite limited selection of apps for the device. Nontheless, The colourful album photo collages while songs play and the updateable nature of the software really contribute to the Zune HD experience.
Device
The Zune itselft is very well done, with a double menu, optional 3 Languages, Favorites, Recently Added and Recently Played Segments, and "Smart DJ", a feature that selects music related to an artist/song of your choosing(much like the Music Genome Project). The Touch Screen is very responsive, and the browser and multitasking abilities are quite good, and the dedicated button for volume and track selection (even while online) is very useful, and the fact that the device tells you the next 4 songs in line is very tip-top.
Conclusions
Should you buy a Zune HD? Yes. The device is simply wonderful, and it gives the impression that it will last quite awhile. I like the softare (once I can coerce it into working, that is) and the device is simply brilliant. I'm sure that whether or not you are also a "PC" you will definitely love and enjoy this product, as I have.
