Good scanner, bad support
Pros
High quality scans
Cons
Good luck getting any support
Recommended it?
No
I have the slightly older 9600XL, and they're actually up to the 9800 now. But I wanted to let people know two things that should apply to the whole line:
If you are concerned with color accuracy, I have had very good results with my scanner. With some hand tweaking I've used these scans to publish full-color books. And now that the interface is USB, you won't have the headaches I had with the SCSI setup.
That's the good news. The bad news is that Microtek, which always had a policy that they would not authorize any third-party repair shops, has closed their U.S. repair facility. So there is now no way to repair these scanners if they break. All they will do for you is sell you a new one at a discount. Also, their web tech support sucks. There's no forum, I can never find my problem in the knowledgebase, and when I've tried to email tech support I never hear anything back.
