Am I doing something wrong?

Pros Build quality, controls are in the right place, feels and looks like a serious camera.
Cons Rear screen gets dirty easily. Need more G series Pro lenses priced under $1000.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Photos don't look any better than photos from lesser cameras. I'm speaking of clarity, contrast, color and overall visual appeal. I don't know what to make of this.
I am a long-time rookie who has hopes of becoming a serious amateur. I'm using the "new" Minolta 24-105mm lens that supposedly was designed with the Maxxum 7 in mind. I've been using the full program mode almost exclusively so far....until I learn more. A few outdoor photos that I took on an overcast day just don't look very good. I have also used a name brand polarizer on bright, sunny days. The colors from all shots are slightly dull and contrast is not good. Photos from my trusty old Minolta X700 and Vivitar lens appear to be more vivid, crisp and clear than the ones I've taken with the Maxxum 7. Even though I may lack technical expertise, I do have a knack for taking good shots. I work with a gal who takes point & shoot photos with her Canon Rebel and Canon zoom. We're both using the same type of film and techniques. Yet, her photos seem to have sharper detail and more vivid color. I am a little frustrated in that the photos I've taken so far seem to be "lacking". I'm not sure what to think of my Maxxum 7 and 24-105 lens. The camera itself is great... very versatile, intuitive, and has enough gizmos to challenge a pro. In my point & shoot testing so far, the Maxxum 7 has not given me satisfactory photos. Is it the Minolta lens? Right now, I wish I had a Canon or Nikon to try out...just to see if it's me or the Minolta!
