The Bottom Line:
Solid and inexpensive camera, considering the durability and features offered. It will last a very long time, won't break and has more features than you can think of.
After reading many articles about new cameras and considering my old 9000 died and is not repairable, according to MINOLTA, I decided to buy the Minolta 800si. This camera is called the Dynax 800si in Europe.
I bought mine in Germany because of a great price (US$ 420, body only.)
This is a very solid camera and it has a ton of built-in programs, too many to mention. Built-in shot data memory. Very fast and accurate AF. Very accurate and hard to fool exposure control. Ability to capture those fast events with ease. Built in dual speed silent rewind. The 800si has everything imaginable except perhaps a mirror lockup.
Great ergonomics, especially with the VC-700 hand grip. 3-memory switch. Backlit LCD.
It really is a fantastic camera. While it does not have the professional sealing and durability level of my previous 9000, it has the needed eye start defeat switch, and enough built-in programs to eliminate need for the prior generation custom function cards. The new Maxxum 7 would be worth considering but since used 800?s are easy to find, very solid and bulletproof, I would suggest getting a pre-owned one.
Most camera controls are easy to reach. The 3-memory switch allows you to set some often-used functions without having to go behind the small door. Custom settings are of the "option 1, setting 1 or 2" type. Without the manual, you have no clue what they are. Chances are you set them once and will not have to bother ever again.
Metering is not easily fooled by extreme light conditions with results often much better than expected.
This camera beats just about everything in it's price range, and probably some more expensive cameras as well.
Weaknesses:
No mirror lock-up. Accessibility of some features. Behind a small door.
Strengths:
The 800si has numerous features for a great price. To mention just a few: Eye start control (defeatable), very bright viewfinder, absolutely reliable (no problems after more than 6 months and 50 rolls of film), data resource memory, program for quick situations and manual capability with options in between and custom memory settings. Silent rewind capability.
