I am a long time user of Maxxum cameras, from the first generation to the latest. Minolta has taken everything they have learned over the past 15 years of building these things, and distilled the best of all their models right here.
The camera is useable by anyone with even the most basic knowledge of modern SLRs. Unlike almost any other AF camera, you don't need an instruction manual to make the most of this camera. All controls are clearly marked knobs and dials.
AF is fast and positive - the best of the Maxxum line. Motor speed is 5.5 frames/second without the need for a booster. AF areas are displayed by a flashing red square on the finder. I shoot ice skating and I find the AF tracks motion beautifully, even with the largest lenses.
The solidity of this camera is first-rate. It's right up there with the Nikon F5, and better than anything Canon has out.
Minolta has retained a built-in flash. This is a good decision. You can use it as fill, or use it to wirelessly control (not just trigger - control) a 5400HS flash or a 3500xi flash. Flash sync by the way goes all the way to 1/12,000th second with the 5400HS. Great stuff. Don't worrk about that flash breaking by the way - it's made of steel :)
I recommend the VC-9 vertical grip as an accessory. Allows you to use 3 different power sources, as well as duplicating the controls along the base for easy vertical format shooting.
The only thing I have found a problem (and it is a very minor one) is the lack of a metering pattern display in the finder. Otherwise, it may be as close to perfect as you're likely to find, and it's backed up by superb lenses and a great flash system.
