Sports, Events, Hiking, and Business Versatility: Minolta UC 8x18 Binocular
Pros
Lightest binocular for events, travel, hiking. Bright, clear widescreen vision.
Cons
Will not work with eyeglasses, and must be shielded to prevent glare in bright light.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I highly recommend this binocular. It has been durable and extremely useful. This is a binocular meant to be carried everywhere and used often.
These are the most portable and lightweight compact binoculars around. The view is bright and clear and resembles widescreen TV images rather than the traditional round field of conventional binoculars. The coated lenses and optics produce an image that rivals top notch conventional binoculars in side-by-side comparisons.
I have used them to watch NBA games from the "nosebleed" seats and enjoyed the wide field of vision and light-weight. These are the only binoculars I will carry on extended hiking trips or skiing, and are so small and light, they can be carried unobtrusively in a pocket for ready access. The design is perfect for travel, and the binoculars can be easily carried onboard airplanes in the provided soft case. For business purposes the binoculars are ideal where detailed observation of equipment and operations is required, or for magnification of objects as close as 6-feet. As an engineer this has allowed me to observe minute details of hazardous mechanical operations from a safe distance. The small size is unobtrusive, and can be carried in business clothing.
Ergonomics of these binoculars are good for an ultra compact, and the UC-III improves on earlier designs, providing a deeper rounded recess to fit around the nose-bridge and extends the eyepiece for improved comfort and reduced glare. These binoculars rest against the nose bridge, not against your eye. Once you are accustomed to the position of the glasses, they are easy and comfortable to use. People that wear glasses will not obtain good results without removing eyewear. The flexible main focus and diopter adjustment (right eye)will allow most eyeglass wearers to obtain good results, but they must remove eyewear, an inconvenience.
Drawbacks: They lack eyecups and in very bright conditions, you need to shield sunglare by cupping your hands around the sides and top. This also makes these binoculars difficult (impossible?) to use with glasses.
