Mitsubishi LT-46144, Great picture, poor reliabiltiy

byk1rdm Jan 17, 2009
Pros Picture Quality, Set-up, Input/output options
Cons Defective LCD.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Picture quality: unmatched.  Reliability: unacceptable.  If Mitsubishi can debug their LCD and reliability in general, I would consider them.  But would not recommend them at this time.
I purchased an LT-46144 from Tweeter, before anyone knew they were going out of business.  But that's another story.  The TV had a fantastic picture.  It's one thing to see the whites of the characters eyes, but what struck me was really seeing the eye color jump right out.  The picture motion is smooth as silk.  And it was very easy to set up.

About 2 weeks after purchase, we noticed a black line on the left hand side, about 1 to 2 inches in.  It was intermittent; it would be there for 15 minutes or more, and then it was gone for hours.  Once I knew it was there, I found myself subconsciously distracted from the show, looking for it.

I called Mitsubishi and spoke to a customer service technician.  I wanted to find out if it would get worse.  I also called Tweeter about returning it.  Mitsubishi indicated that it was a problem that would likely get worse. You will find some discussion on the web about it, and people have had trouble getting the display replaced in a timely manner.  I decided to return the TV to the dealer for a full refund.

Ultimately, I decided that while the picture was the best I saw on any of the 46 TVs I looked at, it was not worth the risk of ~$2k that I would have that problem again.  Consumer Reports ranked the Mitsubishi TVs as one of those needing the most repairs.

I ended up with a Sony instead.  The picture wasn't as good, but it was a bit less expensive, and appears to have better reliability.
