Not plug and play

Pros Excellent picture quality, plenty of inputs, backlit remote, has wheels on bottom of cabinet.
Cons Requires a professional calibration for optimum performance. Weighs 180 pounds.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  For the PRICE POINT this is the most bang for your buck. For a third of the cost my picture is 90% as good as a DLP.
Have owned this TV for a little over a week. I have done a lot of research on spec sheets and internet before viewing a few sets.

Contenders:
Panasonic PT-47WX53
Hitachi 46W500
Toshiba 46H83
Sony KP-46WT510

I went to my local HI-Fi and retail stores to view said pieces. Each store allowed me to connect a progressive scan DVD player and calibrate the sets as I saw fit. Of course I took my Video Essentials disc with me.

Each set required an extensive amount of convergence before any real viewing could be done. Which brings me to my first point. I was thoroughly impressed with the Mits for including a 64 point convergence. Most of the other sets only had 9 points at best. The auto convergence features were nice, but were only good enough for DVD quality or less.

Each set had its own strengths and weaknesses, but pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the Mits could not be beat. The amount of light output was more than enough. The CRT's are the same used in the 55" set. In my living room I have one wall next to the set with a 9 1/2 foot paladium window. Directly behind my viewing couch, is a bay window. The set is able to handle such harsh light conditions with ease. The viewing angle of the screen is another story, but light output is not a problem. The diamond shield glare glass definitely helps.

Each input is able to be calibrated and stored individually. A certain plus for those dark gaming systems. All color correction and black level functions can be turned on and off for accurate calibration. There is even a very fine edge function which can be toggled on and off. When running split screen mode, the appropriate settings for each input remains intact.

All component inputs accept 480i,480p,and 1080i signals. The manual states the set will upconvert 720p signals to 080i, however I have been unsuccessful in getting the set to accept a 720p signal. The 1080i signal is absolutely stunning. Once the HD signal is set up, the TV must be reconverged. After the convergence has been set on 1080i, when you check it in standard 480i, the convergence will look perfect. Without the convergence, objects on the screen will appear to have a 3-D like quality. With blue lines on one side, and red lines on the other. This set does include a DVI-HDCP input as well as an RGBHV which is shared as the DTV input.

This TV will not hide the quality of your signal. If you have a sub-par cable or satellite signal, this TV will amplify just how degraded it really is. On the other hand, if you have a good front end, like a HD-set top box, or progressive scan DVD player with at least a 10bit 54mhz video processor, then this TV will compliment the signal in spades. The viewing formats for stretching a 4:3 signal (standard TV) are some of the best in the industry. You will never get the same picture, unless you watch 4:3 with the gray bars on either side.

The black level on most RPTV's, especially CRT's, is never up to standard. This is actually one of MItsubishi's strong points. Even though there is an exceptional level of light output with this TV, the Black level is just as impressive. If there is no information there, such as a 2.35:1 anomorphic DVD with bars on top and bottom, the bars just blend into the cabinet, as though they are not even there. If you are to view a dark film, such as Underworld, you will notice subtle details in the blacks, without crushing blacks or solids.

The audio is great for a TV, but then again....it's a TV. I have this set as the viewing piece for my home theater, so I use a surround sound system instead of the included speakers. I have not had a chance to use the variable, or fixed audio outputs so i can not comment on them.

Although I will not say this is better than a quality DLP screen, I will say that this is by far one of the cleanest, and sharpest looking CRT screens I have ever watched. I primarily watch DVD's and this set more than accomodates my purpose. I would not recommend this set to the average Television watcher, unless you were primarily going to watch HDTV. This set is perfect for the movie buff, or video game junkie.
