Wife's PO'd but I love it
Pros
outstanding picture quality
Cons
big and still expensive
Recommended it?
Yes
I've waited over a year for wide-screen high definition TV prices to come down, which they have, and I just couldn't wait any longer. So I picked this up 55" HDTV beauty last month for $3,499; I know...that's still pretty pricey for a television. And, it?s caused a little strife on the home front as well, mainly because this is a very BIG box, measuring 50" wide and 50" tall. A very big big-boy toy...
Features I like:
1) Outstanding picture quality
2) A truly universal remote that controls my Sony DVD and Sharp VCR quite nicely
3) Lots of hook-ups in the back...up to 4 S-Video device connections (plus one in the front...good for digital camera hook-ups), plus a stereo receiver connection and some other stuff I don't use
4) Simulated surround sound, which is pretty good, and useful if you don't want to hook up a stereo receiver
5) The TV is on rollers...which you'll need...very heavy
6) The High Definition receiver is sold separately, which is really a good thing given there are currently 17 different HDTV standards, any one of which could become the basis for future cable and satellite broadcast
7) And great cabinet styling
Features missing...I would like it to have:
1) Drivers and connections for external speakers built into the back
2) A center channel speaker connection, so you don't have to hook up a stereo receiver to hear movies the way they were intended to be heard
Features I don't like:
1) Since this is a projection TV, the cabinet is pretty deep, standing 28.5" from the wall.
If you?re going to spring for a new large screen TV soon, go for the high definition model. Even if your area doesn't receive HD signals yet (1,000 lines), you can still get 500-line resolution from your DVD's and 400 lines from S-VHS videos. And go for the wide-screen model as well...you'll really enjoy watching letterbox movies that fill the screen.
