The Bottom Line:
If you want the best, get a '711 Diamond Series from Mitsubishi.
The WS-65711 is an integrated TV. That means that it has a built-in HDTV tuner. The benefits are fantastic. While my cable company offers only 2 HDTV channels, I can use the NetCommand feature to toggle over to the rabbit ears and pull in over 6 local HDTV channels that come in even better than the HDTV cable box. If you're looking for an integrated HDTV that can do everything you want or need, then this is the TV for you.
I compared the Mitsubishi to the Hitachi because the Hitachi had better technical specs on paper. However, the cabinet on the Mitsubishi looked far superior to the Hitachi in my opinion. To the eye, I also liked the Mitsubishi's picture better as well. After all, you are buying the TV to watch it, not to read its spec sheet.
Moreover, most rear projection televisions of this size use 7" guns. Therefore, the specs are only as good as what the projection tubes can actually project. Only 9" guns can amply handle true 720p as well as 1080i. The WS-65711 upconverts 720p to 1080i. That is, it probably really downconverts 720p to 540p. That I know of, only the Mitsubishi 73" comes with 9" guns. However, the 73" also increases the price by several thousand dollars. If I had the room and the money to spare, I would have probably gone with the 73" WS-73711. But the WS-65711 was just right for my needs. The side by side picture quality between the 65" and the 73" is too close to even call. It was so close to me that I did not think it was worth another $2,000 or $3,000 to get the 73".
