The Bottom Line:
If you are willing to spend this kind of money you might as well get the best. This is it.
It has always been a dream of my husbands to own a big screen television. For many years I discouraged it because frankly they cost way too much. As we got older and my husband began to enjoy the fruits of all of his years of hard work he again pleaded to get a big screen television. He said that he had researched a bunch on Epinions and he knew which models he wanted to look at. I figured, ?Ok, he deserves it, and we have no debt and our savings is pretty solid why not.? So we headed to the television store to look at the big projection televisions. He had researched several models including WS-65905 but had ruled it out because of the large price, $5,900, to be exact. When we got to the television store and looked at the model he had most wanted to buy we were frankly disappointed. This television he had wanted had a long and narrow screen, and though he thought that it was alright I didn?t think I could part with that much money thinking that I would be watching everyone on television with a flat and scrunchy head. I told him I didn?t really like it that much and we should look around, he agreed. Almost immediately after that my eyes caught this huge monster of a thing in the back of the store where they highlighted their most expensive televisions. The picture looked great. It was more square than flat and everybody did not have flat squishy heads. How did my husband feel about it, well lets just say he was in aw and it was love at first site for him.
He immediately called over the sales guy and began asking him tons of questions, and asking him to adjust the lighting and such around the television so that we could see how the picture looked in different lights. You see if you are looking at a television over $5,000 they will do that for you. When it came time to ask the price of the television I almost passed out when I heard the answer, when the sales associate said that it was currently on sale for $5,900. This was quite frankly a lot more than the $3000 dollar television we had originally came to look at. The first thing that came out of my mouth was, ?lets go back and look at that other one.? My husband responded with, ?I thought you didn?t like that one.? I said, ?Well for almost $3000 less I could find a way to like it.? My husband told the sales associate that we needed some time to talk about it. He excused himself and the begging began. I really, really love the television, my husband said, suddenly he was a better at begging and pleading than my 3 and 5 year old children. After being together for over 15 years I had never once since seen him so much at my mercy, I had also never seen him want anything so badly. I asked him how he expected to pay for it and he quickly devised a plan in his head. The plan actually made sense. This led me to believe that he had been considering this, and thinking of a plan for a while now. I suddenly found myself saying yes, but with a lot of conditions. He agreed to them all and then practically skipped back to the sales associate. I said that I had to go and throw up. I could not believe that we had just spent this much money on a television.
The Television
Mitsubishi actually sells another television that looks very similar and is almost the same size and actually cheaper by about a thousand dollars. We were told by the sales person that the reason the price was so much more for this set was because the viewing quality is the best viewing quality available in that price range. Since we noticed that right away our selves we could not argue with the quality of it. We were also told that this television was the best thing on the market for watching DVD?s and that you truly get movie theater quality viewing. We have found all of his claims to be true. But if you do purchase this television you will have to make sure you get a compatible DVD player. The first DVD player we hooked up to this television did not work well the television and the quality we got at first when watching DVD?s was not great. My husband was quite angry and called the store to complain, they came out to check the problem and said that the problem was not with the television but with the DVD player so of course we had to go out and spend an extra $100.00 on a more compatible DVD. Frankly I think the store should have made sure we went home with the correct one in the first place and that guys who installed the television should have said something. By the way after paying that much for the television we also had to pay extra for delivery and installation. There is something seriously wrong about that.
After the DVD player was replaced we were treated to near movie theater quality movie viewing, and all of our friends came over to watch movies on our TV. The quality of DVD viewing is not the same for regular television watching and VHS. This TV was designed for showing quality DVD?s. Although the quality is not as near perfect for TV viewing and VHS viewing it is still pretty good.
This TV is quite large but does not seem bulky or over whelming. It?s nice squared shape and nicely sized width make it appear to be more stylish than bulky. We also bought a cabinet that was perfect for ours and has to glass storage areas on both sides and has wood that goes over the top. The cabinet matches the wood in our home so the television and cabinet actually look very good in our family room kind of like everything was custom made. Since the television and everything about the unit is black you can pretty much match it up with any decor. Even though this is not bulky it is big though so I would not suggest getting one of these if you don?t have a good sized room to put it in. You should have a room that is not necessarily large but is long in length. Like most large screen, projection televisions if you get to close you will not be getting a good picture. You can change the viewing of your television screen it adjusts down to three different sizes so if you want to watch television in a more compact and visible way you do the have the option of doing that. However when you do that you lose several inches of viewing on each side of the screen. I am not much of a techy so I can?t tell you what that feature is called I believe it is formatting but I could be wrong.
One of the things that I kind of get a kick out of is that since the TV is bit wide it seems to stretch out people?s bodies on television an makes them all look like the have put on 10 or 20 pounds. This television is not real kind to butts, as pretty much everyone?s butt looks big on this TV. I have always thought this was pretty funny and until we were watching one of our own family movies and I saw how my butt looked on there. That was not so funny.
When we first got the television all of our friends were joking about how we now needed to install surround sound all along our family room. But we had to joke back saying that the television cost so much that we don?t have money to buy food let alone a surround sound system. Yes we can buy food but the surround sound will have to wait, for a very long time. This TV does seem like it should be hooked up to surround sound. After all you have a movie theater quality picture, why not have movie theater quality sound as well? Well I can tell you that the television does not have a problem with volume, even without surround sound it can get quite high. And when you are in the room watching something you can still feel explosions and stuff like that. So we are not really in a big hurry to get surround sound.
Features As Described by The Owners guide
The Television comes with a Mitsubishi remote control, which require 2 AA batteries. This remote is about the same size most remotes and there is really nothing special about it. This remote can also operate your DVD player and your VCR.
The television has an option to upgrade to HDTV which will cause the television to display high definition pictures. They recommend the Mitsubishi SR-HD500 or a similar model.
Wide Screen Picture Format ? I sort of explained this in my ittiful laymen terms above.
PIP/POP Viewing Option - This stands for Picture-in-Picture and Picture-outside-picture
V-Chip Technology ? This means the ability to restrict certain programming.
Conclusion:
The most memorable thing about our visit to the store is when we expressed concerns to the sales rep about the fact that we have young children and worried about the television getting broken at some point by them. Not that our children are violent beasts or anything but most kids crash into things when they are running around and playing especially if they have had too much sugar. After we expressed our concerns he turned around and punched the screen of the television with the side of his fist. This shocked us but he explained that Mitsubishi had taken every possible measure to ensure that the Television was extremely durable. So far it has been but we still have an imaginary line in the family room that the kids are not allowed to cross, we try to keep them at least 4 feet back from the TV at all times.
We have been happy with our television and it is really difficult to watch a regular TV after getting used to watching this one. It has been a joy to have. Probably the best feature of this TV is watching the reactions of people when they come into our home for the first time since we bought it. There hasn?t been anyone yet that hasn?t stopped in their tracks and stared at it, and most of them say, ?Wow, not that?s a TV.? This makes my husband smile from ear to ear and beam with pride the same way he does when one of our children do something amazing. But despite all of that 5 months later I still find myself saying, ?I can?t believe we spent this much money on a Television set.?
