The Bottom Line:
Overall this is a great system. DVD sessions are a blast. The images are great and the TV fit my modest entertainment room. Also the price was right.
I purchased a Mitsubishi 46? HDTV from The Good Guys last week. It was last year?s out of box special which I paid around $1.8K plus $400 for the maintenance agreement. The list price was around $2.3K for last year?s model while this year?s model was bumped up to about $2.5K. A sales associate explained the difference between last year?s model and this year?s model as that this year?s model has more PIP/POP features. Other than that the TVs are the same. I happily took last year?s model since I think PIP/POP is over rated.
As you may notice with this TV that it has a letterbox screen. This is interesting in that typical TV broadcasts and are squared shaped. What Mitsubishi has done to work around this is that by default they stretch the square imaged broadcast into a letterbox screen. The effect is that the images are slightly distorted but more pleasing than having black bars on the left and right side of the TV. You can also easily scroll through other formats if you don?t like the stretched effect from the remote control.
Another thing that my wife and I noticed while in the store is that the image from the Mitsubishi is really bright. The image was crystal clear and you could see the image clearly from reasonable angles. The only angel that does not work well is if you are looking down on it. But 45 degree angles from the left or right is fine.
Since I have a two-year-old child I was concerned about her little hands touching the screen of the TV. Mitsubishi was smart and installed a nice thin plastic cover over the screen that can take a lot of abuse and just can be cleaned with common window cleaner.
One of the criteria for the TV we where shopping for was that it could not be very high because of the room dimensions we where dealing with. This TV is only 37? inches high. The image you see above includes an optional stand. So if you want your TV to sit higher there are a number of stands you can place the TV on.
There are two negatives I have about this TV. One is that it does not do well with low-resolution images. I have AT&T?s digital cable so I get analog and digital signals. I noticed that analog signals are fuzzy while digital broadcast come in clear. I am going to get the TV tuned-up and maybe that will help with the resolution problem. The second hassle about this TV is the setup. Since I am configuring the TV with other components and a surround sound system there are a lot of wires and setting to mess with. I was quickly over come with the complexity of the system. I have basic TV now but I am still struggling with setting up PIP and a few other things.
