The Bottom Line:
Best in class performance and features for a bargain price.
Introduction
The Mitsubishi 46" WT-46809 is perhaps the best widescreen HDTV ready television on the market at its price point. For under $2000.00, this T.V. looks sharper, has more vibrant colors, and superb color separation than other T.V.'s costing thousands more.
Picture
The picture quality on this television is very sharp. The digital 3D Y/C Comb Filter reduces staggering of text and graphic display and increases image clarity even with images that change rapidly. The television even incorporates a 3:2 pull-down progressive scan conversion in "Film Mode" to further increase the picture quality for programs that originated on film. To get the most out of this television, it should be coupled with a good progressive scan DVD player or HDTV tuner and high-quality cables. Other features include five different picture formats to fill the screen with pictures of different aspect ratios, split screen, and several picture in picture/picture out of picture options.
Inputs
One of the added bonuses with the Mitsubishi is dual 480p/480i component video inputs. If you have an XBox or PS2, the use of component video cables will dramatically increase the picture quality and overall gaming experience. Additional Composite, Audio, & S-Video inputs are located in the front panel to allow for the easy connection of portable (or temporary) A/V devices.
Design
The WT-46809 is a "table-top" model, which means that it is relatively short in height and requires that it be elevated to normal eye level for proper viewing. The optional stand looks very nice with the T.V. and forms a cohesive unit. The stand, however, will not hold many components (a receiver will fit on 1 side with no room for any additional components, or 2 normal sized components will fit on a side). Another option is to custom install this television into a wall, and for which the "table-top" design is ideal. The fit and finish of the T.V. is excellent and looks very modern without looking too pretentious. The remote is intuitive and easy to use and has numerous multifunction commands as well as illumination on key buttons.
Conclusion
Compared with other T.V.'s in this price range, a better quality product cannot be found. It has an excellent feature set, room for expandability, and outstanding picture quality. The sound, which I have not addressed, is quite good for normal T.V. viewing. Of course, this T.V. should be a part of a complete home theater system to truly appreciate the whole experience. Setup was easy. What more could you ask for?
