The Bottom Line:
Mitsubishi's failure to support the product when used as they designed it has been a major disappointment. Great product until you watch HDTV narrowscreen shows.
Got the TV at the end of November, 2001, and signed up for digital cable with a HDTV decoder box. Absolutely fantastic display of HDTV images. Widescreen DVDs with our progressive scan player look better than the local movie house. Most of the big CBS shows are in HDTV widescreen, but the commercials are narrowscreen. A lot of the Fox HDTV programs are also narrowscreen. So, you get black bands down the side of the display. Unlike other modes, the "format" button does not work with the HDTV inputs, so you can't expand the picture to make these bands go away.
We found out the hard way that watching an HDTV narrowscreen feed will cause these black bands to burn in in short order. Our TV is 6 months old and we've got the bands. What's really sad is we've only had digital cable for about 3 months, so we actually got the bands with less than 3 months of viewing.
Mitsubishi insists that this is not covered in their warranty, which clearly warns in the manual about watching programs in the "narrow" mode (has gray bands on the side) or watching stations that put images on the screen for long periods (think home shopping channels). Unfortunately, since they disabled the format button you can't make the bands go away, but they still say it's my fault for watching programs that are narrowscreen. The guy on the phone actually suggested I speak to the broadcasters since they control the picture.
My opinion of Mitsubishi has changed 180 degrees based on their response to my concerns. I'd not have any problems if the black band issue was something in my control, but since they don't allow format changes when watching an HDTV feed, it was out of my control. The 4 year service plan I purchased to "protect" my investment is not worth much if they don't stand behind the product when used as they designed it.
