Highly satisfied
Pros
Very feature-rich, great sound quality, NOAA, 99 codes, comes with earbud headsets, NiCD or AA.
Cons
Heavier than some others
Recommended it?
Yes
I admit we haven't done distance tests on them, bit reviews elsewhere indicated the range on these is very good. I was more after features and sound quality. The sound quality was rated very good elsewhere, and I agree. I have a friend with a few different GMRS units, but this one sounds better.
I bought these for $70 (!!!!) at Costco, cheaper than the going price for the next model down (5920), but this one has a NOAA weather radio and advanced scanning mode.
Something you should know about the NiCd units- they can take AA's or the NiCd pack. Best of both worlds- if the battery pack dies, throw in some AA's and keep talking.
VibraCall with headphones is great for conferences, etc. VOX was another feature I wanted. While this unit does both iVox (VOX with the built-in mic) and VOX (VOX with a headet/mic), the headset that comes with it does not do VOX; it has a PTT button.
The one feature I wanted that this unit didn't have was voice scrambling, but the few units with scrambling that weren't discontinued, were MUCH more expensive.
