The Bottom Line:
For the FRS/GMRS combo this is the radio to beat. The T5200 is the best FRS only radio I've ever owned
I got a pair of T5950's on EBAY ($45) good deal in itself because they were new and the person had never opened the sealed container. The radios have that 'Motorola' solid feel with nice balance (others I've owned 'feel' so flimsey and cheap). The NOAA weather is real handy and the sensitivity is plenty (in doors I get the weather on 162.55Mhz) solid where my RS weather radio is a little scratchy no matter where I sit it the T5950 has NO problems.
The GMRS/FRS dual feature is nice I know most people dont apply for the GMRS license because of cost but legally you should. Anyway on the 1/2w FRS I typically get 1 mile pretty solid and up to 2 miles where there is few terrain obsticals (buildings, trees, over passes etc). Boating on FRS is very much improved over water (count on 3 miles pretty regular)and 5 miles with 1w GMRS. Some reviews I've read by dissatisfied user claim .2 or .3 miles??? I wonder if their radios are broken when they received them.. If there talking about this radio they must be measuring range in downtown NY city or they have a serious trouble with the radio because this is NOT normal for 1watt UHF at these frequencies except under adverse terrain cond.
