Motorola T6400 FRS / GMRS
Pros
Compact unit w/ 22 channels, vibrate mode, voice scramble mode :-)
Cons
FCC license required to transmit on GMRS channels, No weather bands :-(
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
If looking for a little more range at a cheap price, buy this radio. If you need even more range, shell out the money for the professional 2 Watt versions.
This is an inexpensive FRS/GMRS unit ($75 - $25 rebate = $50) that bridges the gap between more expensive GMRS units.
Radio gives complete FRS / GMRS coverage.
Ch 1-7 are FRS/GMRS channels with 1 Watt TX power.
Ch 8-14 are FRS only channels with 0.5 Watt TX power.
Ch 15-22 are GMRS only channels with 1 Watt TX power.
These units are not designed for kids. To transmit on GMRS channels an FCC license is required ($75 for 5 years usage) and call letters must be used.
However, the good thing is you can have increased range on FRS/GMRS channels 1-7 due to the 1 Watt of TX power.
When transmitting on GMRS channels, battery life will be reduced somewhat. Have extra batteries with you on the trail. Stop watch/clock feature is a waste of chip capacity. They should have had a weatherband feature instead. Vibrate mode is very useful in noisy areas. Unit has a voice scramble feature. Two thumbs up!!!
