The Bottom Line:
If all you want in a phone is to make phone calls, this phone will work just fine for you, however if you want anything more, look elsewhere.
When I moved from Ohio to the Mojave Desert, I found that Verizon did not provide service to the area (it does now). Since I prefer to use my cell phone as my home/only phone, I needed a new phone fast. Since Nextel was the only company that serviced the area, I had to buy one of their phones. I was torn between the i850 and i580. I purchased the i850 because of it’s size and similarity to my beloved LG VX6000 (see my review).
For the two years that I have had this phone it has been fairly dependable. It is a simple phone that doesn’t have any of the bells and whistles of today’s modern smart phones. It is fairly compact, though a bit bigger and heavier than my old LG VX6000. My initial problem with this phone were the lack of a security lock out (type in code to make calls) and that if you receive a text message and don’t check it, the alarm feature of the phone does not work. Now that I have had this phone for 2 years, the battery life is dying off to less than one day per charge. After 2 years, I have come to realize that this phone is beyond it’s usefulness.
This phone is very basic by today’s standards. No web access, no games, no MP3 player, no Bluetooth. The speakerphone has an adjustable volume and on it’s highest setting is quite loud and if you are not careful, people over 25 feet away can hear both sides of your conversation in a quiet room. The ringer volume is loud but still not loud enough when the phone is placed in one's pocket. The phone also features vibrate which generally solves this problem for me.
The phone book is capable of storing multiple numbers per person with different symbols for home, cell, work, etc. The phone even stores fax numbers and email addresses, though it can't utilize either. The phone book can also store a picture of the person, which will appear on the interior screen when making or receiving a call from that person. The phone goes further to allow personalized ring tones for each person in the phone book.
The phone features a calendar and four alarm clocks. This is important for those of us who are busy and forget things like birthdays or holidays. Also the alarm is highly useful since I travel a lot and hotel alarm clocks vary at most locations. The best feature being the working week alarm which only runs Monday through Friday, so you don’t have to disable it every weekend.
The camera is great for those times when there is enough light to use it. Because it requires significant light, bars/clubs are out of the question. Not great but acceptable for quick shots, there is no optical zoom or flash.
As stated before, this is my only phone, and I take it everywhere. I have not had any problems with call clarity or dropping calls. In other words, this phone has never failed me in performing its duty as a phone.
