Great as an MP3 Player, Other Functions Are Mediocre

Pros Awesome MP3 player, versatile folders, intuitive controls.
Cons Poor microphone quality, poor FM recording quality, FM autoscan is not the greatest.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  An excellent entry or mid level MP3 Player for newbies and techies alike. Holds tons of music, is tiny, versatile and is easy to use.
The purpose of my review is to give a "bottom line" on the player, in general terms, from a person who has no prior experience with MP3 players, or downloading music to or from his PC. In this respect, I am a complete and total Newbie.

My Newbie Impressions:

Positive:

Downloading:
As an MP3 Player, this thing is awesome. It took me a few days before I fully understood just how to rip songs, convert them to MP3, then put them onto the player. Once I figured it out, I was amazed at how easy and quick it was to do. Not only can you put a ton of songs on the player, but you can place them in individual files. This worked out great for a recent road trip that my family took. I had my own file, my wife had hers, and we even had one for my two year old son, filled with his goofy children's songs. We all took turns listening to our songs, and had a great time, and never ran out of music! When we got out of the car, I just popped the player in my pocket and took our whole music collection with us....no need to worry about my car getting broken into and getting a gob of CD's stolen.

Controls:
There are two buttons on the side for volume (up/down)...simple enough. There is also a wheel that controls the navigation through the different functions that you view on the tiny screen, also very simple and intuitive to use.

Equalizer:
This is a really cool feature. In addition to several presets (Rock, Jazz, etc), you can customize one EQ, tweeking your music to your tastes.

Display:
You can customize the display window to flip it 180 degrees, depending on how you wear the player, or if you are a righty or a lefty. A thoughtful touch. You can also have the screen illuminated with a blue glow (more on this later).

FM Radio:
This is good and bad. It is good in that it has a large amount of presets to store your favorite radio stations. The sound quality for the FM radio is very good, too. The problem is that the FM Autoscanner is not very good at locking onto stations. It may or may not lock onto your favorite station, so you may have a little difficulty receiving the station that you want. Moving and stretching the earbud cord (the antenna) may or may not help. It's kind of hit or miss, but still a neat function to have if you tire of your own stored music.

Size/Weight:
Unbelievable. The player is so tiny and light that you may forget that it's in your pocket, on your belt, or on your arm.

Holder Accessories:
The supplied rubber-like belt clip holder is great. It protects the player, while only exposing the screen and control buttons/wheel, and it easily clips to your belt/pocket/shirt/whatever. The adjustable arm band is very nice also...infinitely adjustable and not flimsy, and the supplied belt clip holder simply clips right to the strap.

Earphones:
As far as I'm concerned, the earbuds sound really, really good. I have a pair that came with my Aiwa FM radio that I purchased from the Sharper Image (the amount that I paid for the radio five years ago was the same amount that I paid for the Muvo), and the Muvo earbuds sound far superior.

Negative:

Illumination:
Yeah, you've already read about this one...when you have the illumination feature turned on and you press any button to light up the screen, there is an annoying buzz. You can control the length of illumination (from a couple seconds to several), but trust me, you'll end up just turning it off, unless you are using your player in the dark, in which case you'll just have to put up with it. It's a bummer, too, because the Muvo people definitely thought up some neat functions for this player. Having a light that didn't make an annoying buzz would have been a definite plus.

Microphone/Voice Recording:
The condensor microphone stinks. Period. I tried recording from various distances and various angles, but no matter how you slice it, it sounds like you are talking through a wall of mud. The sound quality is horrible. The voice recording function should only be used for the most rudimentary of reasons.

FM Recording:
This feature functions just fine, but again, the sound quality is pretty poor. If you record your favorite FM program, be prepared for a disappointing result....muddy and muffled, but at least discernible. At least it's nowhere near as bad as the voice recorder

Bottom Line:
Overall, as an MP3 player, this thing is awesome. It's extremely tiny, lightweight, easy to use, and holds a ton of music. Just don't expect the other features to blow you away...they are mediocre at best. But don't let that deter you from buying this player...it really is a great little music machine!!
