Excellent Sport Mp3 player with SD/MMC expansion
Pros
Robust, SD expansion, good firmware
Cons
Small buttons, no recording.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Excellent value for money, and probably the best sports mp3.
This is an excellent Sport Mp3 player with SD/MMC expansion. Its about the size of a small stopwatch. I chose this over the Rio and MPIO as it was cheaper (#70) and splash/knock resistant, USB2, and no-one complained about the firmware!
The firmware is very good - up to 3 levels of folders, shuffle play within any folder level or even across internal and SD card memory. Resumes where you left off after switch off.
My Sandisk and Toshiba 256MB SD cards worked fine without reformatting and they are safely tucked away inside the case. Not tried a 1GB card yet but I've heard this works, although the manual says 512MB max. Works fine as a USB Flash drive with no drivers required (except 98 of course), internal and SD cards show up as seperate drives. You need the mini USB cable of course, but it would be diffcult to make it splash resistant with a full size usb plug. Can be used with supplied Creative software or Windows Media player.
Menus are icons with left/right/select. Up/Down buttons are Volume only and accessable at all times. (Took me a little while to get used to this).
The LCD (not OLED) screen is a good size and you can't hear the backlight coming on (unless you're on the radio and it is out of tune!). Displays ID3 tags and can be set to a Date/Time 'screensaver'. Contrast and Backlight times are adjustable.
Sound quality seems very good to me, there is 5 band equaliser or presets.
The radio is not bad with autoscan and presets, as with all radios this size its only as good as where you've got the aerial/headphone wire!
Joggers/Gym people: This comes with an excellent stretchy velcro armband (there's no way it'll come off) and you don't have to worry about sweat, etc as it clips securely into a rubber sheath. The supplied headphones are pretty good too with a single wire and 'behind the neck' band so they won't pop out of your ears or wallop around when you take them off, although you can hear it if something rubs the headband on quieter tracks. There's also a fully featured stopwatch and countdown timer with recorded list of split and lap times.
Downsides are the small buttons but you get used to them and I guess you don't get water resistant jog wheels etc. Buttons are lockable by menu option. No voice recorder but again, this is a sports model and I don't need it.
Overall, this is my first mp3 player and I'm very pleased with it. I originally wanted a cheapo, but after reading the reviews the firmware in most of these seemed a bit dodgy, whereas Creative can be trusted to supply updates. If you already use SD/MMC cards (Camera/Palm etc) then storage isn't a problem and its excellent value for money. These cards are getting cheaper all the time too.
No regrets,
Chris
