Was great when it worked, but it's been passed by new entries on the market.
Pros
Great battery life, earphones are better then most, sound quality, SD cards cheap.
Cons
Materials do not stand the test of time, oversized, shuffle function erratic.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
If it stayed in one piece, this would be a good player for fitness freaks. Nowadays, there are superior choices in the market.
I originally picked up my C100 after searching for a rugged MP3 player that I would only be using for exercising, both indoors and out. I wanted it to be flash-based, with an arm band or waist clip, earphones that would stay on my head when I went running and would be ok if I dropped it or a bit of rain or sweat hit it.
At the time (over 1 year ago) the C100 seemed to be one of the only ones up for the job. I also have Creative Zen Micro and have been very happy with it, so I thought I would give the C100 a try.
At first I was really pleased with it's performance - the stop watch was a helpful function and the screen was easy to navigate. The sound quality was great and with a small clip on the band attaching it to my ponytail, the earbuds would stay in place without fuss. My only initial complaint was the armband - I found (and still do) that it had men's arms in mind as the sizing was done - it's cranked down as much as the velcro will allow for in order for it to be snug, which leaves extra strap dangling.
However, about a month or so out of warranty, without cause, the screen just stopped working. I didn't drop it or anything. It lights up when I press buttons, but no black text appears at all. At first it would show up a here and there, all garbled up, but now, nothing. So much for that stop watch function...
I'll say that the player is quite light and doesn't skip or 'musically' malfunction. The battery life is superb - it lasts several months for me just using it to work out (3~ times a week). Perhaps that's because it doesn't have to power the screen?! I still use it for exercising, I just can only really turn it on and off, forward or reverse the track or volume up and down. Thank goodness I had it set to shuffle before the screen broke.
Also, about a month ago, the small silicone band that wraps around the outer edge of the earbud itself fell off and inside the treadmill (what luck). Now the right earbud scratches in my ear and flops around...I'm not sure why those wouldn't have been secured/glued at the factory but Creative's Customer Service unfortunately doesn't have those as replacement parts, so I'm SOL.
Finally, I have to say that the arm strap hasn't held up all that great. Given that it's velcro, it's getting ratty, especially the extra strap that flops around (see above).
All my quality issues aside, things I would like to see to make this a perfect sport MP3 player:
- smaller in size, it's really too big once you have it in the case with the strap
- ability to clip it to your pants/shorts
- earbuds with adjustibility
- shuffle function a bit wonky, sometimes rotates the same tracks more then others
Things I liked (until quality issues arose):
- earbuds are the 'best of the worst' that I've tried for exercising
- generally fairly rugged (screen issue not because of a drop/water)
- excellent battery life
- inexpensive
- expandable memory via SD card cheap and easy to find
- cool sport features like stopwatch
Perhaps I got a lemon, but in the end I was hoping for a faithful companion and got a limping tag-along.
