The Bottom Line:
The combination of low price, excellent brightness and contrast, and size make this LCD unbeatable!
My never-ending quest to find more Sony CPD-M151 monitors has ended (see my epinion here). Not only did Sony discontinue this monitor, I have now found an excellent replacement for it! The NEC LCD1530V is by far the best value I've come across in LCD monitors, and I have purchased / tested several of them.
The initial testing occurred at a local electronics store. I glanced over the monitors briefly, and the NEC (along with the Viewsonic VG150) struck me immediately with its bright screen and excellent picture quality. I then opened up Paint and drew a bitmap composed of several 1 pixel wide black lines (drawn vertically) with 1 pixel wide white spaces. I took one step back, and the difference between all of the monitors on display was readily apparent. The bitmap appeared on the vast majority of LCDs as either muddy (black and white lines running into each other) or they changed colors, despite the bitmap being only black and white. The NEC exemplified great contrast between the pairs of black and white lines and was brilliant.
When I found out that Dell had stopped offering its 1503FP LCD for a while, I was actually very happy because I could get a couple of the 1530Vs for our systems in the office. On top of that, they were about $100 cheaper ($400 street price... try buy.com!). I immediately ordered two of them.
I received the monitors a couple of days ago and have one of them set up on a desktop system, and setup was a snap! The trickiest part was removing the rear panel to insert the power and video connections, and even that was simple. My favorite feature of this monitor is the integrated power supply! Not only does it reduce clutter under the desk, it also allows for easy installation into our robotic systems.
In addition, these monitors offer a large viewing area for such a small footprint. At 15.1", I'd even replace my 17" monitor at home with one of these! I will definitely purchase one for personal use within the next few months. At $400, it's tough to refuse.
The 1530V even beats its more expensive brother, the LCD1525M. I've seen that all of the 1525Ms we have in the office have a little bit of ghosting around the icons on the desktop. The 1530V exhibits none of these artifacts.
All in all, you won't be disappointed with this LCD. The combination of low price, excellent brightness and contrast, and size make it unbeatable... at least until the 17" LCDs drop below $500. =)
